Geriatric Foot Care Requires Close Attention

Geriatric Foot Care is not something to consider at an older age, it should be thought of as mandatory. This is because the elderly have an increased risk of developing foot infections due to genetics, a lower blood circulation or a reduced immune system. For these reasons, proper geriatric foot care is necessary to extend the life of feet for those who are older. Seniors also tend to be more predisposed to developing foot conditions such as ulcers, ingrown toenails or fungus toenails. It is therefore imperative that a senior has access to a caregiver; or, that they are able to look over their feet on their own.

Seven Actions for the elderly to take to prevent foot infections:

  1. Washing and drying feet on a regular basis.

  2. Changing socks regularly if your feet get sweaty.

  3. Changing shoes so that sweat does not build up within them.

  4. Trim toenails in a straight manner to prevent ingrown toenails.

  5. Refrain from walking barefoot to avoid a fungal infection and injuries to your feet.

  6. Avoid crossing legs to prevent restricting circulation to the feet.

  7. Supportive footwear.

Treatment for this condition includes:

  • Inspecting your feet throughout the day to prevent any further complications.

  • Use of creams and powders prescribed.

  • Visiting your podiatrist, Dr. Ara Kelekian, DPM, on a regular basis.
